Group Exhibition:
ELEMENTS
ELEMENTS refers to the four classical elements of alchemy: fire, earth, air, and water, and the fifth element, spirit (or aether). These elements are the pillars of the world and evoke symbolic systems, like life force (fire), body (earth), thought (air), emotion (water), and the soul (aether). French philosopher Gaston Bachelard (1884-1962) concluded that the four elements resulted from “material image-making” or “the materialization of imagery.” He drew meaning from the inherent qualities of each element, claiming that “earthly joy is riches and impediment; aquatic joy is softness and repose; fiery pleasure is desire and love” and “airy delight is liberty and movement”.
